What is an Orphaned section/activities and how do I fix it?

You will learn what an Orphaned section (Orphaned activities) is and how to fix it. When you use the Import tool (or the Simple Restore tool) to bring in Activities and Resources from another course which has more topic sections in it than does the destination course, you may see that some of the topic sections at the bottom of the course do not appear unless editing is turned on.

Follow these steps after you have imported content into a destination course where there are orphaned activities (orphaned section). There are two ways shown below how to fix this issue.

1. Enter your destination course in TITANium.

2. Turn editing on.

3. View the course while editing is turned on.

4. Scroll down to the bottom of the course main page.

With editing turned on, you will see that the bottom section in this example is labeled Orphaned activities.

So, this sample course should have 8 Sections (Weeks), but the 8th one is "orphaned" meaning it does not show to students.

5. Using the + sign to fix orphaned activities

Use these sub-steps to fix orphaned activities one section at a time.

5.1. Click on the + symbol.

With editing turned on, look in the bottom right-hand corner of the course main page. You will see icons with a + and a - sign. Click on the + sign icon. This will add a Topic Section to the bottom of your course main page. Or, in the case of an Orphaned activities section, it will cause the Topic Section to become visible to students.

5.2. Section Week 8 is now no longer orphaned.

The previously orphaned topic section has been added and will now appear on the course main page.

6. Using Edit settings to fix multiple orphaned activities

6.1. Click on Edit settings in the Administration block.

Returning to the top of the course main page, locate the Administration block and click on the Edit settings link.

6.2. Scroll down the page and expand the Course format section.

6.3. Use the drop down menu to select the desired number of sections.

The drop down menu under Number of sections will allow you to decide how many sections to display on the course main page. In this sample course, we want to display 8 Topic sections.
