How do I hide a Section on my course main page until a student completes a previous Activity?
You will learn how to use Completion tracking/Activity completion, Restrict access and Grade to pass to hide a Topic Section on your course main page in TITANium until a student completes a given Activity with a passing grade, such as an Orientation quiz as in the following example.
Follow these steps to learn how to (1) enable Completion tracking, (2) set a Restrict access rule, (3) set a restriction on a Topic section, and (4) set a passing grade.
Follow these steps to enable Completion tracking for your course.
1.1. Enter your course in TITANium.
1.2. Click on Edit settings.
The Edit settings link is in the Administration block which by default is the first block in the left-hand column of your course main page.
1.3. Scroll down the page and expand the Completion tracking section.
1.4. Use the drop down menu to select YES.
1.5. Scroll down and click on Save changes.
Follow these steps to add Activity completion to the Orientation quiz activity.
2.1. Click on the Activity link.
2.2. Click on Quiz Administration Edit settings.
2.3. Scroll down the page and expand the Activity completion section.
2.4. Use the drop down menu to select Show activity as complete when conditions are met.
2.5. Check Require grade.
2.6. Check Require passing grade.
2.7. Click on Save and return to course.
2.8. The Quiz now has a check box to the right of the title.
Follow these steps to set a Restrict access condition to a course Topic Section.
3.1. Turn editing on.
3.2. Click on the Cog wheel.
3.3. Expand the Restrict access section.
3.4. Click on Add restriction.
3.5. Click on Activity completion.
Note: Your own list of restriction categories may be different than shown below. The list of restrictions increases as you add/enable features within your course. For example, the Groups and Grouping restrictions only show up once you have added a group and a grouping respectively to your course. Likewise, if you have not enabled Completion tracking in the course edit settings, then the Activity completion restriction option will not display.
3.6. Using the drop down menu, choose "Quiz on Orientation Video".
The Quiz is the activity which must be completed with a passing grade before this Week 1 section will become accessible to the students.
3.7. Using the second drop down menu, choose "must be complete with pass grade".
3.8. Click on Save changes.
3.9. Instructor view of the Week 1 Topic Section.
As the instructor of this course, you can see that there is now a listed restriction for students to view this Week 1 Topic Section.
3.10. Student view of the Week 1 Topic Section.
The Topic title, Week 1, and the Topic Summary (currently there isn't one) will be visible to the students. Also, the required action is listed, so that students know what they need to do in order to view that Topic Section.
Follow these steps to add a Passing grade criterion to the Orientation quiz activity.
4.1. Click on Grades in the Administration block.
4.2. Select Categories and items from the drop down menu.
4.3. Locate the Quiz on Orientation Video and click on Edit.
4.4. Click on Edit settings.
4.5. Click on Show more....
4.6. Type a value for Grade to pass field.
In this case, the "Quiz on the Orientation Video" is set for "Interactive with multiple tries" which means that as the student checks the answer question by question they receive feedback based on which answer they chose. Wrong answers can be tried again for full credit. Or, a student may retake the quiz as many times as they want until they get all of the answers correct. So, all students should be able to get 100% on the quiz with relatively little difficulty.
4.7. Click on Save changes.
You have now learned how to enable Completion tracking, set a Restrict access rule, and set a passing grade in order to hide a given course main page topic section until a specific grade is obtained on an activity.
