How do I create a simple gradebook for a face-to-face course?

You will learn how to add Grade items to the gradebook for a simple "Natural" or sum of grades gradebook where students can view their grades for your face-to-face course.

1. View the grade breakdown in your syllabus.

Assignment Points
Bio and Photo 25
Opinion Paper 100
Critical Analysis 100
Social Order 100
Research Proposal 200
Final Exam 125

2. Click on the Gear icon on the course main page.

3. Select Gradebook setup.

4. The Gradebook setup page will display.

This is the main page where you will do all of your creation of grade items, categories (folders) and aggregation methods (we'll do "Natural" aggregation which is summing the grade points). You can also create custom calculations, set a category to drop the lowest grade, and create a category which deducts points rather than adding point.

5. Click on Add grade item.

6. Type a title for the first grade item.

You can type pretty much any text you want, but if you have plans to export the gradebook to Excel, and/or import grades from Excel, then it is recommended to not use any symbols, like !@#$%^&*(), etc.

7. Type the maximum number of points possible.

8. Click on Save changes.

Locking the grade or creating a lock after date is not recommended because it is not uncommon for a faculty member to create such a date, then when they try to grade this Grade item, they find it is locked. They don't remember that they locked it.

9. We now have our first Grade item in the Gradebook setup page.

Would you like to edit this Grade item?

Follow these steps to edit this grade item. Let's say for example that you want to add a Grade to pass to this grade item. A Grade to pass is useful if you are using Activity Completion within the course or you simply want students grades to display in the Grader report as either red (didn't achieve the Grade to pass) or green (did achieve the Grade to pass).

9.1. Click on Edit.

9.2. Select Edit settings.

9.3. Click on Show more...

9.4. Type a value for the Grade to pass.

9.5. Click on Save changes.

10. Repeat this process to add the remaining Grade items for your course.

Note that the Max grade column for the Course total will automatically adjust for each Grade item you create.

Article Summary

You have now learned how to setup a basic gradebook for your face-to-face course.

How do I add a Range on a category item? I created an item but it does not let me add a score because a range is not set up.

Ken Moyer

When you create a Grade Item on the Gradebook setup page (used to be called Categories and items), you can specify the range by using the Maximum grade and the Minimum grade fields. To edit a Grade item that you have already created, return to the Grade setup page and click on the Edit link to the right of the Grade item you want to edit.

One of the students' grade is locked. There is a symbol of it is indicated on a single view. What is the cause of it?

Ken Moyer

To remove a locked grade item for an individual student, go to the Grader report and click on 'Turn editing on'. Now, click on the cog wheel next to grade item which has the lock on it. Deselect the 'Locked' checkbox. Make sure that the 'Lock after' date is not checked. Finally, click on 'Save changes'. That should do it.
